About the author

Daniel Pauly

University Killam Professor & Principal Investigator, Sea Around Us , Institute for Oceans and Fisheries, 2202 Main Mall, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia V6T 1Z4, Canada

Recipient of the International Ecology Institute (ECI) Prize 2007 in marine ecology

Professor Daniel Pauly was elected by the ECI Jury chaired by Professor Bo Barker Jørgensen (Bremen, Germany). Daniel Pauly pioneered the assessment of the impact of fishing on the world's marine ecosystems. His work on marine ecosystem conservation has met widest acceptance through his 'Marine Trophic Index, MTI' (i.e. the mean trophic level of fisheries landings). MTI was endorsed in 2004 by the Convention of Biological Diversity as one of eight ecological/biodiversity indicators for immediate testing. He is one of the most highly-cited marine ecologists and has been ranked among the world's 50 leading scientists (Scientific American's 50 Research Leaders).

About the book

EE Book 22 provides elements for the incorporation of oxygen into a level- or domain-specific theory that predicts risk-minimizing behavior in fishes, both under food and oxygen constrains. Daniel Pauly's primary concerns focus on advancing a novel theory of growth.

This 2nd edn. presents new evidence and resolves various misunderstandings connected with the Gill-Oxygen Limitation Theory. The theory can be used to maintain sustainable fisheries, and to support aquaculture research.
